May is Better Hearing and Speech Month

Since 1927, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASLHA) has designated May as Better Hearing and Speech Month. It is an opportunity to raise awareness, knowledge, and understanding of the kinds of communication impairments and to analyze one’s own audio and vocal capabilities.

The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders reports that an estimated 43 million Americans have a hearing, speech, voice, or language impairment. “Hearing loss can strike at any age and at any time. The signs of hearing loss can be subtle and emerge slowly, or they can be significant and come on suddenly. Either way, even a slight hearing loss has an impact on all areas of a person’s daily life,” explains Lori Ader-Steinhauser, M.S., Certified Audiologist, Presence St. Mary’s Hospital Ear, Head, and Neck Institute and Hearing Center.

When your hearing is improved, your life and your methods of communication are improved. The key is early detection for babies and young children and annual hearing check-ups for adults.

For more information about hearing and speech impairments, call the Presence St. Mary’s Hospital Ear, Head, and Neck Institute and Hearing Center at 815.937.2141. The center specializes in disorders of the ears, nose, sinuses, and throat for children and adults. It is under the leadership of Francis L. Hobson, MD, who is Board Certified in Otolaryngology.

For a limited time, all hearing aids are $100 off. This offer will expire on July 31, 2013.
