HALO Project and Waldenbooks recently became partners in a collaborative effort to bring comfort and cheer to sick children who receive services in Provena United Samaritans Medical Center’s Pediatric and Emergency Departments.
Waldenbooks coordinates community efforts by hosting a children’s book drive for non-profit organizations. As patrons of Waldenbooks check out at the register, they are asked if they would like to buy a second book, to be donated to the organization for which the book drive is being held. Waldenbooks holds and boxes all of the donated books until the end of the book drive.
The community donated over four-hundred books, totaling $1,172 for the children who are being treated at Provena United Samaritans Medical Center’s Pediatric and Emergency Departments. HALO Project delivers the books to each department. The books are new and have never been used.
Waldenbooks holds the book drive for non-profit organizations because they want to make a difference in our community and bringing comfort and cheer to sick children is a wonderful way to make a difference.
Carrie Lindsey, Store Manager at Waldenbooks, says, “The Waldenbooks Store wants to give back to the Danville community, which has been so supportive of us over the years. The opportunity presents itself through this project and is made possible through our wonderful patrons who donate the books while shopping in our store.”
Kathy Richard, Director, HALO Project, says, “Children are often frightened when they are treated in the hospital’s Emergency Room or admitted to the Pediatric Unit. Receiving a new book with animated pictures to look at and wonderful stories to read or listen to helps take the child’s focus off of discomfort and assists the child in feeling more comfortable in unfamiliar surroundings.”
"HALO Project and Provena United Samaritans Medical Center are grateful for the books that were collected by Waldenbooks and donated by such caring people from the community. We thank Waldenbooks and those who donated books for being such fantastic community partners in touching the lives of those children who are being treated in Provena United Samaritans Medical Center’s Emergency and Pediatric Departments," says Richards.
