Officials at Provena Health today announced the promotion of Anthony J. Filer, 56, to System Chief Operating Officer (COO) from System Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. 

In his new role, Filer will provide executive leadership in ensuring the optimal operating effectiveness and strategic positioning of Provena Health's six hospitals, as well as its long term care and home care division, Provena Life Connections.  He will also oversee Provena's Performance Excellence initiatives, ensuring alignment between system and ministry activities. The appointment is effective January 1, 2011.

Filer joined Provena Health in June of 2002 as System Vice President, Finance and CFO and was promoted to Senior Vice President in March of 2005.  Prior to that, he served as Vice President of Operational Finance for Ascension Health, a Catholic health system based in St. Louis.  He previously served as Regional CFO for the Daughters of Charity National Health System in Baltimore; Vice President of Finance for Franciscan Health System of Aston, Pennsylvania, a 13-hospital system; Vice President of Finance and CFO of St. Joseph Medical Center in Reading, Pennsylvania; and as a Senior Audit Manager for Ernst & Young's Philadelphia practice office.

Filer earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from Susquehanna University of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, and is a certified public accountant.  He is a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
