Provena Covenant awards grand prize for Name the Robot Contest in a surprise ceremony
11/17/2011

More than 180 local K-5 students submitted robot coloring contest pages and name submissions for the new da Vinci surgical robot system at Provena Covenant Medical Center as a part of the Name the Robot contest.

Of these, Robeson Elementary School 2nd grader William Ding won the grand prize with his name submission of “Dr. R.U.S.S.,” which stands for Robotic Ultimate Surgical System. William won a certificate from Provena Covenant, along with a $100 Visa gift card and will get a private tour of the da Vinci operating room.

In addition to the grand prize, three runner-up prizes were awarded in preceding weeks to the school with the most entries and to the two most artistic robot coloring pages. Judah Christian School had more than 80 students submit entries, which earned them a $100 Visa gift card. Two most artistic awards were given in the K-2 and 3-5 age groups. Samuel McArthur, a kindergartner at Kenwood Elementary and Ashanti Williams, a 4th grader at Prairie School, won a $50 Visa gift card each for the two most artistic entries.

With the most advanced da Vinci surgical system in East Central Illinois, Provena Covenant Medical Center’s sophisticated robotic technology enables surgeons to perform minimally invasive procedures with unrivaled precision. Patients experience significantly less pain, less scarring, shorter hospital stays and quicker return to normal activities.

“The da Vinci Si technology is truly remarkable because it allows the physician such precise accuracy during procedures,” said Dr. Michael Smith, Christie Clinic Obstetrician/Gynecologist, President of the Medical Staff at Provena Covenant, and the first physician to use this technology at Provena Covenant.

Often an effective alternative to open surgery or laparoscopy, the da Vinci Si system is used in procedures that treat a range of conditions, including bladder cancer, coronary artery disease, endometriosis, gynecologic cancer, hysterectomies, kidney disorders, obesity, prostate cancer, throat cancer and uterine fibroids.
