"Provena talks about powerful healing. I am a living example of that."

When Carol Sermersheim was diagnosed with cancer some years ago, there was no question as to where she would seek care.  A long time resident of Danville, Carol always knew Provena United Samaritans Medical Center (PUSMC) provided leading-edge, quality care and its team of employees was known for compassion and dedicated service. 

"I was actually sad when my treatment was over," said Carol.  "The staff became like family to us, and we called them our angels.  Once I was fully recovered, I knew I wanted to give back to the medical center in some way as a thank you for the excellent care I received."

She began by sharing her experience of the great care she received with other cancer patients in the community, some of whom had been traveling long distances for treatment. Then she learned that the PUSMC Foundation was fundraising for a large-scale renovation project to create a comprehensive Women's Health Center within its Danville campus and she knew she had found her cause.

Carol is among  thousands of individuals who give graciously of their time, talent and treasure each year to philanthropic efforts that support Provena ministries within the local communities they serve.  . Through the generosity of donors and volunteers alike Provena is able to purchase new medical equipment and enhance facilities; provide charitable care to the most vulnerable of patients; offer beneficial training to staff; provide health and wellness education; and so much more.

Philanthropy includes more than just financial donations.  Like Carol, many members of the communities Provena serves are so thankful for the care they or a loved one receive, that they want to do a little something extra to express their gratitude. Many times, that involves working alongside our Foundations to donate their talents, skills, or their time through important volunteer service. In 2008 alone, our volunteers donated over 290,000 hours of service to our ministries.  This figure represents a monetary contribution that is equivalent to 139 full-time employees.  They are contributions made in the spirit of giving, with special recognition of the integral role we all play in building communities of healing and hope.

Other giving includes tax deductible contributions, will bequests, and planned gifts.  Additionally, patients and residents, as well as their family members, often pay tribute to a Provena caregivers who made their healthcare experience special through Provena Guardian Angel programs.  These charitable ways of saying "thank you" continue to help us meet the needs of our communities in many unique ways.  Every donation, no matter how large or small, helps Provena Health live our mission and transform communities, one life at a time.
