Provena Covenant to Petition High Court For Review
09/09/2008
We will announce publicly today our decision to seek the Illinois Supreme Court review of last month’s ruling by the 4th District Appellate Court which reversed an earlier Circuit Court order to restore the religious and charitable property tax exemption of Provena Covenant Medical Center.
In pursuing this review, we believe strongly that the Appellate Court opinion runs counter to the law, facts and evidence of our case and impacts on the ability of our ministry to continue care for those in need regardless of their ability to pay.
The petition will be filed by the end of the month, and we expect to be allowed to vigorously appeal this decision before the high court.
Cody Sokolski, Chair of the Board of Provena Covenant Medical Center, and Fr. William Grogan, System Director, Ethics, and Healthcare Liaison to Cardinal Francis George and the Archdiocese of Chicago, spoke on our behalf with members of the media today regarding this important next step. We do anticipate press coverage and will share that with you.
