Provena Saint Joseph Hospital receives Susan G. Komen for the Cure Grant
04/17/2009
Provena Saint Joseph Hospital Bob & Edna Meadows Regional Cancer Care Center was recently informed that they are receiving a grant from the Chicagoland Area Affiliate of Susan G. Koman for the Cure to fund “Boomers and Beyond: A Breast Education Plan” project, which will educate 300 women aged 65 years and older on the benefits of breast self exams, mammography and early detection in McHenry, DuPage and Kane Counties.
The American Geriatric Society recommends mammography screening for women up to the age of 85 years. Unfortunately research indicates that physician recommendation and mammography use decline with a woman’s age. There is a great need to educate women 65 years and older on the importance of early detection.
Diagnosis of breast cancer in its early stage and its treatment would prevent unnecessary illness, disability and untimely death. The “Boomers and Beyond” program will feature trained professionals who will provide community education related to breast self exams and mammography to women over 65.
