Gretchen Charlton Art Gallery Named "Essential" Tourist Destination
06/16/2009

The Kankakee County Convention and Visitors Bureau named the Gretchen Charlton Art Gallery an “Essential Location for Excellence in Tourism” at their annual event on Friday, June 12.

The Gretchen Charlton Art Gallery is a one-of-a-kind destination and serves as the only public art gallery in Kankakee County. Located on the campus of Provena Heritage Village, the gallery offers something for everyone. From youth programs that feature children’s book illustrators to college photography exhibits to resident art shows where residents of Provena Heritage Village display their creativity, the gallery brings the arts to all ages.

“When Jack and Gretchen Charlton founded the gallery 10 years ago, they wanted to impact the residents of Provena Heritage Village as well as raise awareness of the arts in the greater Kankakee River Valley community,” said Janet Glazar, Director, Gretchen Charlton Art Gallery. “The Charlton’s would be proud to see the gallery recognized as a tourist destination today.”

The Gretchen Charlton Art Gallery provides older adults at Provena Heritage Village with many opportunities to experience the arts on-site. With monthly classes and events as well as an annual resident art exhibit, patients and residents enjoy putting their creative talents to work! Americans for the Arts reports that the arts are an important emotional outlet and provide mental stimulation for older adults. Even further, ongoing and direct access to the arts has a direct impact on quality of life (www.americansforthearts.org).

Whether you are a visitor to the area or have been a Kankakee County resident your entire life, be sure to stop in at the Gretchen Charlton Art Gallery to see what’s new and exciting. Last year alone, the gallery hosted over 3,000 visitors! Currently, the gallery is hosting its 8th annual juried college art exhibit, and each month the art gallery features an evening event or workshop where you can learn more about the arts.
