Provena Covenant Harvests Corn To Distribute to Those in Need
08/04/2009
Beginning August 3 and lasting roughly 10 days, Provena Covenant Medical Center will pick corn from the two acres of its farming property in southwest Champaign.
The Provena Covenant Foundation owns farmland once donated to the organization, and routinely has cash crops with proceeds benefiting the Foundation, programs, the medical center, and the community.
The 25,000 ears of corn will be picked and distributed to employees at Provena Covenant and Provena United Samaritans Medical Center in Danville and the Women, Infant, Children Program. Corn will be distributed at various community locations, including local churches after mass with the proceeds going to the St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry.
Through the efforts of Provena Covenant and the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District (CUPHD), corn will be delivered to needy families throughout the area and sold at the farmer’s market.
"This is an excellent way to assist the community by putting fresh food right on their table," said David Selzer, Vice-President of Development and Mission.
