Patients at Provena United Samaritans Medical Center now have a special way
to recognize outstanding individuals for the care they receive while at the
medical facility. Provena United Samaritans Medical Center Foundation staff
launched an innovative program called “Guardian Angel.”
The idea came about because patients and their families wanted a way to honor
the professional and caring staff at the medical center and to give back in some
way. The Provena United Samaritans Medical Center Foundation staff researched a
number of options before developing the Guardian Angel project.
“The Guardian Angel program was inspired by the dozens of wonderful
stories shared by patients,” explains Chad Hays, Vice President of Development
at Provena USMC Foundation. “They talked about the exceptional care they receive
from nursing staff, clinical staff, physicians, maintenance, and housekeeping
while at the hospital for treatment. We are excited about the new avenue for
patients to participate with us.”
When a patient or his or her family and friends nominates a staff person and
makes a donation of $25 or more, a Guardian Angel gets his or her “wings.”
Patients can earmark their gifts for the honoree’s unit or allow the Foundation
to decide where it will do the most good.
Guardian Angels are recognized by their direct supervisors at staff and
leadership meetings. Each Guardian Angel receives a pin to let people know that
he or she is an outstanding employee as determined by a patient or their family.
The most important aspect of the program is that patients and their loved
ones can thank the staff members that made a difference in their stay. The
positive feedback of cancer patients, inpatients and outpatients is reaching
hospital administration and staff members alike.
