All of us at Provena Covenant Medical Center are extremely gratified that Circuit Court Judge Patrick J. Londrigan on Friday, July 20, reversed the State’s decision to deny property-tax exemption to Provena Covenant, deeming it to be tax exempt on charitable and religious grounds, and entitling us to the return of property taxes paid since its tax exemption was removed in early 2004.
This judgment, based on the law and reached after full consideration of extensive briefing by the parties and a large record of evidence, reaffirms Provena Covenant’s charitable and religious mission and will assist the Medical Center in continuing our commitment to providing for the needs of our community, our facility, and our dedicated team of employees.
As a faith based and non-profit hospital, Provena Covenant, from its very beginnings, has existed for the purpose of caring for all regardless of their ability to pay. Despite the temporary loss of our property exemption, Provena Covenant continued to fulfill our commitment to providing quality health care to all we serve – a fact which has been long encouraged and supported by our Urbana-Champaign community.
We are very pleased the Court recognized this dedication to our charitable mission in its ruling handed down last week.
Provena Covenant Medical Center is very proud of its significant contributions to the community. It is also a pleasure to know that our restored property tax-exemption will allow us to continue to make further investment in our tradition of service and care for the benefit of generations of area residents to come.
