Provena Covenant Medical Center is hosting the Provena Health Walk on October 24 from 4:00pm – 8:00pm at The High School of Saint Thomas More Track.
The walk will be full of family fun and will include food, a DJ and music, games and activities for children, and free apples and water for the public.
100% of the funds raised will stay local and benefit the Sister Mary Gabriel Curby Endowment Fund, which provides access for the poor to quality health care and to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to help feed the hungry.
"This is an excellent way to bring the community together to raise money to help provide healthcare and food to those most in need here in our community," said David Selzer, Vice-President of Mission and Development.
The event is open to the public. Walkers raising $25 will receive a free t-shirt. Money raised will be collected at the Health Walk or can be dropped off at the Provena Covenant Medical Center Foundation. Those in attendance at the walk will have a chance to see participant Dr. Terence Fitzgerald as he tries his luck at the Guinness Book of World Records at the Health Walk.
Due to his recent experiences with family members and friends who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, Fitzgerald has decided to raise money and awareness for the cause, focusing on the underserved women in Champaign-Urbana.
Fitzgerald, with support from Provena Covenant Medical Center and the Refinery in Champaign, has decided to set a record that exemplifies strength and endurance.
"I was watching a documentary of my childhood hero Evel Knievel, and it came to me! People love to watch or hear about people doing crazy physical feats," said Fitzgerald.
Beginning on October 23 at 11:30pm at the Refinery, Fitzgerald will attempt to lift 300,000 lbs of weight with his upper body, do 100,000 lbs of leg work, run 14 miles, complete 25 miles of elliptical work, bike 120 miles, walk/hike 15 miles with a 30lb pack, do 2,000 crunches, and row on a stationary machine for 20 miles. He will finish all of this in 19 hours, ending at the Provena Health Walk.
