History / Overview

At the encouragement of Joseph Cardinal Bernardin, Provena Health was born in 1997 from a human need to provide exceptional and compassionate health care services, and to be a sign of hope to all those in the communities it serves.

Since then, our Provena Health Catholic health system has evolved to include six hospitals, 17 long-term care and senior residential facilities, 28 clinics, five home health agencies and other health-related activities operating in Illinois and Indiana.

1831: Sisters of Mercy founded in Dublin, Ireland by Blessed Catherine McAuley

1846: Mother Frances Xavier Warde arrives with six Sisters of Mercy in Chicago

1860: Servants of the Holy Heart of Mary founded in Paris, France by Jeanne Marie Moisan and Fr. Francois Delaplace

1866: Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart founded in Seelbach, Germany by Fr. William Berger and Mother Carlotta Himmelsbach

1876: Mother Anastasia Bischler arrives in Avilla, Indiana to establish the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart in the United States.

1889: Four Servants of the Holy Heart of Mary arrive in Bourbonnais

1896: St. Joseph Home for the Aged founded in Freeport, now know as Provena St. Joseph Center

1896: St. Vincent Home for Children founded in Freeport, now known as Provena St. Vincent Community Living Facility

1911: Fox Knoll founded as part of St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Aurora

1954: Fortin Villa founded in Bourbonnais

1959: Maria Linden founded in Rockford, now known as Provena Cor Mariae Center

1967: Briarcliff Manor (now Provena Our Lady of Victory) founded in Bourbonnais

1970: Heritage House (now Provena Heritage Village) founded in Kankakee

1972: Home Care, Kankakee, began services as a department of St. Mary's Hospital

1972: Geneva Care Center founded in Geneva

1976: Franciscan Home Health, Joliet, began services as a department of St. Joseph Medical Center.

1977: Sacred Heart Home founded in Avilla, Indiana

1978: Pine View Care Center founded in St. Charles

1981: Laverna Terrace founded in Avilla, Indiana

1982: Franciscan Home Health, Waukegan, began services as a department of St. Therese Medical Center

1983: St. Mary's Adult Day Center founded in Kankakee as part of St. Mary's Hospital

1985: McAuley Manor founded in Aurora

1986: St. Anne Center founded in Rockford

1988: Franciscan Home Health, Elgin began services as a department of St. Joseph's

1988: Home Care, Urbana began services as a department of Mercy Hospital

1989: Franciscan Nursing Home (now Provena Villa Franciscan) founded in Joliet

1993: St. Anne Place founded in Rockford

1995: Meadowview Manor (now Provena Heritage Lodge) founded in Kankakee

1997: Provena Health founded December 1, 1997 when the regional health and human service activities of the three Roman Catholic congregations were merged.

2000: Provena Home Care established as a separate operating unit of Provena Health

2009: Provena Senior Services and Provena Home Care aligned

2010: Provena Life Connections became the new name for Provena Senior Services and Provena Home Care
