Non-Invasive Testing

At our Sister Rita Heart Center, we aim to catch heart disease in its early stages so treatment can begin before symptoms appear.

When at all possible, our doctors will utilize non-invasive diagnostic procedures to assess the strength and health of your heart. These diagnostic tests provide high-quality data, but do not require an operation or incision. They are much less stressful and require little or no recovery time. The highly trained staff of the Heart Center are certified and experienced in dealing with every condition.

In addition to our heart screening and wellness programs, we offer a variety of non-invasive diagnostic tests that your doctor may prescribe, including:

  • Electrocardiogram (EKG) - records the heart's electrical activity in a visual graph. An EKG that takes readings over 24 hours is called a Holter monitor and when performed during exercise, an EKG is called a stress test. This test can show the heart's rate, and detect decreased blood flow, enlargement of the heart or the presence of current or past heart attacks.

  • Echocardiogram - uses high frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to create images of the heart and its vessels that can be used by the physician to detect disease.

  • Stress test - is a special type of test that is used to measure the heart's tolerance for exercise and detect various forms of heart disease. The most common form of exercise stress test combines some form of mild exercise with an electrocardiogram (EKG) to measure the heart's activity both at rest and while working. This test is non-invasive, generally safe and painless. Exercise stress tests may also be performed with echocardiography or nuclear imaging techniques.
