Surgery

In many cases, cardiovascular surgery is the most effective treatment option. We deliver the full spectrum of surgical treatment options and have an excellent record of successful outcomes.

We work in conjunction with physicians of our community to provide a full spectrum of the most advanced surgical techniques available.

Provena Mercy Medical Center is rated in the top 5% in the nation for coronary bypass procedures and the treatment of congestive heart failure. Our Medical Center received the top rating of 5 stars by HealthGrades, the organization that sets the nationwide standard for quality.

Our experienced heart care specialists have access to the most recent technologies, equipment and training to ensure that patients receive our high-quality of care. Surgeries are performed in our new surgery center, which provides superior facilities for patients and their families. The Surgery Center features digital operating suites, the most sophisticated diagnostic imaging available, and a patient- and family-focused environment.

Surgery Procedures include:

  • Coronary artery bypass surgery - The surgery reroutes, or "bypasses," blood around clogged arteries to improve blood flow.

  • Off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery - also known as beating-heart surgery, allows for surgery without having to stop the heart.

  • Minimally invasive heart surgery (MIDCAB) - Approach for bypassing critically blocked arteries that is less difficult and risky than conventional open-heart surgery.

  • Left ventricular assist device implantation (LVAD) - surgically implanted mechanical device that helps the heart pump blood. In other words, they are "heart pumps."

  • Valve replacement and repair - Heart valve disease occurs when a valve doesn't work right. A valve may not open all the way, or have problems closing. If this happens, blood doesn't move through the heart's chambers the way it should. Valve replacement involves replacing the faulty heart valve with a prosthetic (artificial) valve.
