Provena Covenant Officials Comment on High Court Ruling

Officials at Urbana-based Provena Covenant today released the following statement regarding an Illinois Supreme Court ruling that denied the Catholic hospital ministry exemption from paying property taxes:

"We are deeply disappointed that the Illinois Supreme Court has denied the property tax exemption of Provena Covenant Medical Center," said Jon "Cody" Sokolski, Chair of the Board of Provena Covenant Medical Center. "Provena Covenant Medical Center cares for all in our community who need our health services regardless of their ability to pay. Throughout this controversy, we continued to demonstrate that enduring commitment to Urbana-Champaign. In 2008, we provided more than $38 million in free care and other community benefits. Our goal is to carry on in our charitable works, despite the fact that this ruling restricts our ability to do so."

David Bertauski, President and CEO of Provena Covenant, added, "We are deeply grateful to those who support us, especially our dedicated employees who selflessly bring compassionate, faith-based care to our patients each and every day. We can only hope this troubling ruli

Provena Health Celebrates Social Work Month - March 2010

March is designated as Social Work Month. The White House officially recognized National Professional Social Work Month in 1984. From 1984 until 1998 – the centennial year of the profession – the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) selected a social issue to promote every year. Topics included the health care crisis, hate crimes, violence prevention, racial and ethnic harmony, HIV/AIDS, children in poverty, aging parents, value of work, homelessness and more. From 1998 to 2004, Social Work Month themes promoted the profession with general campaigns about who social workers are and how they benefit society.

This year’s celebration theme is: Social Workers Inspire Community Action
Are you inspired? Learn more about volunteer and career opportunities at your local Provena ministry.

Our volunteers go through a comprehensive 16-hour training program. After the initial time commitment for training, volunteer work with hospice can be flexible to fit within your schedule and to serve your community.

Here are 10 simple steps that you can follow to set you on your way to a healthier tomorrow – you’ll feel better and reduce your risk of serious illness. And if you don't get to all 10 in 2010 keep trying. These changes are tried and true and not fads. Just good common sense. Why not take up the challenge and start making these simple changes today?

1. Get moving
Getting enough physical activity is essential for a healthy life. But you don’t need to run marathons or take up body building – all you need is at least 30 minutes of moderate physical every day. You don’t even need to do all 30 minutes at once – break your activity down into three 10 minute periods and you’ll still reap the benefits.

2. Get moving together
Have your family join in too! By encouraging your family to become more physically active, you’re helping them prevent heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure. They’ll also be r

Tips for proper snow shoveling to protect your heart and back

While clearing the ice and snow off your driveways and walkways decreases the risk of falls and injuries, for some, snow shoveling is a dangerous activity for your heart. This may be due to the sudden demand that shoveling places on the heart, causing a quick increase in heart rate and blood pressure. Shoveling is made more difficult by the weather.

Cold air makes it harder to work and breathe, which adds some extra strain on the body. There also is the risk for hypothermia, a decrease in body temperature, if one is not dressed correctly for the weather conditions.

Those most at risk for a heart attack while shoveling snow include:

Anyone who has already had a heart attack

Individuals with a history of heart disease

Individuals leading a sedentary lifestyle

Those with high blood pressure or high cholesterol levels

Smokers

To keep your heart safe while shoveling:

If you have a history of heart trouble or any chronic health concerns, talk to your doctor before shoveling snow.
