Sisters at Provena St. Mary's Mark 150th Anniversary of Founding

During the 1850s, France was in turmoil. The political dissent of the Second French Empire and the spread of the Imperial Bonapartist dictatorship gripped the entire country and were shaping its future. Importantly, it was this unrest that spawned the need and laid the foundation for the founding of the Congregation of the Servants of the Holy Heart of Mary.

Deeply concerned about the many homeless and abandoned children on the streets of Paris, Father François Delaplace, C.S.Sp., prayed fervently for a sign from God as to how to help these orphans. By chance, he met Marie-Jeanne Moisan, a young woman who was seeking the Lord’s will in her life as well. During their conversation, Father Delaplace shared his concerns about the homeless children of Paris and asked for her assistance. She responded immediately and began an enthusiastic search for a home for the children.

Officials at Urbana-based Provena Covenant today released the following statement regarding an Illinois Supreme Court ruling that denied the Catholic hospital ministry exemption from paying property taxes:

"We are deeply disappointed that the Illinois Supreme Court has denied the property tax exemption of Provena Covenant Medical Center," said Jon "Cody" Sokolski, Chair of the Board of Provena Covenant Medical Center. "Provena Covenant Medical Center cares for all in our community who need our health services regardless of their ability to pay. Throughout this controversy, we continued to demonstrate that enduring commitment to Urbana-Champaign. In 2008, we provided more than $38 million in free care and other community benefits. Our goal is to carry on in our charitable works, despite the fact that this ruling restricts our ability to do so."

Corned beef can be high in fat and sodium. Use the Plate Method to properly proportion this traditional St. Patrick's Day feast! Picture your dinner plate as a pie. Fill 1/4 of the plate with corned beef (protein), ¼ of the plate with boiled potatoes (starch), and the other half of the plate with cabbage (vegetables).
It's Spring Break but the Flu is Not Taking a Vacation!

The good news is flu cases have dropped in recent weeks, but 2009 H1N1 Influenza viruses continue to spread in the United States and abroad. Flu activity is difficult to predict, but experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) expect that flu activity - caused by 2009 H1N1 or seasonal flu viruses - will continue for weeks, and some areas may even see big outbreaks.

Last spring, the spread of 2009 H1N1 resulted in a lot of illness following spring break travel. With the 2010 spring breaK approaching and large numbers of people expected to travel both domestically and internationally, getting vaccinated against 2009 H1N1 influenza is especially important.

The 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine is available at doctors' offices, state and local health departments and many pharmacies. Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself against 2009 H1N1 flu. And this protection is especially important if you have a health condition,

Today's Nutrition Month Tip: Are you eating because you are hungry or is so...

Research estimates that 75% of overeating is driven by emotions: loneliness, anger, stress, depression or even boredom. Keep busy with your favorite (healthy) hobbies. Get lost in a book. Find a worthy cause to volunteer for. Exercise the blues or blahs away! Rent a comedy on DVD.

Our grandparents called in roughage. We call it fiber. Whatever the name, make sure you're getting at least 25 grams per day. Fiber helps combat hunger, therefore aiding in weight loss, and also plays a role in reducing risk of heart disease, cancer and diabetes. What does 25 grams of fiber looks like in a day?
 ? 1 cup oatmeal and
 ? 1 banana and
? 2 slice 100% whole grain bread and
 ? 1 cup carrots and
 ? 1 orange and
? 1/2 cup kidney beans, black beans or lentils and
 ? 1 cup broccoli

This year alone, more than 140,000 Americans will be diagnosed with colon cancer, and about 60,000 will die from it. Colon cancer is also one of the most curable types of cancer if it is diagnosed early.

If you're over 50, have your doctor write you an order and call 847-931-5694 to schedule your colonoscopy today.

You should also be aware that 25% of colon cancer occurs in people under 50. One simple step you can take is performing an at home fecal occult test. Provena Saint Joseph Hospital is offering free at home fecal occult tests. The fecal occult blood test is one of a variety of color
