Provena Saint Joseph Hospital has the area’s most advanced, high-resolution diagnostic imaging technology to assist physicians and technologists to discover the causes of medical symptoms and detect potential health problems often before they start.
Provena Saint Joseph Hospital ’s state-of-the-art medical imaging technology includes:
· Computerized Tomography (CT) Scanning
· PET-CT Fusion
· Nuclear Medicine
· Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
· Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS)
· Computerized Radiography (CR)
· Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQRA) accredited mammography and digital mammography
· Bone Densitometry
64-slice CT Scanning
Provena Saint Joseph Hospital was the first hospital in the Fox River Valley and one of the first in the entire Chicago area to offer 64-slice CT scanning -- offering the sharpest CT images available today. It provides remarkably precise imaging of all parts of your body, with greater speed, lower doses, and higher resolution than any other available technology.
For diagnosing heart problems
It’s a painless, non-invasive process that places no stress on the heart. It takes 192 images of the heart every second, far surpassing any other available scanning technology, providing motion-free views of the beating heart and coronary arteries from all angles. It can look directly into the heart vessels for blockages and see how well the blood circulates. It can also view the effectiveness of existing stents and bypass grafts to determine if they remain open or are blocked.
For diagnosing cancer
It enables us to detect the tiniest potential malignancies with extreme speed and accuracy, increasing our ability to discover and treat cancers early. It also lets us perform biopsies right on the table.
PET Scan and PET/CT Fusion
A PET scan is a non-invasive test that examines your body’s cellular function. It follows an isotope injected into the body, working on the body’s blood sugar by tracking high metabolic activity toward a tumor or other problem. With a single scan, your physician gets a complete picture of your entire body, making it easier to diagnose problems, determine the extent of diseases, prescribe treatment, and track your progress.
PET/CT fusion combines both technologies, with PET tracking a problem so that CT imaging can locate it. This enables physicians to diagnose and identify cancer, heart disease, and brain disorders with even greater accuracy. This process helps determine the stage of a cancer and determines its progression.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a radiologic technique that uses magnetism, radio waves, and a computer to scan your body’s structures. Provena Saint Joseph has an onsite, top-of-the-line 1.5T GE MRI scanner.
Our MRI unit produces excellent-quality diagnostic scans that provide extremely accurate images. It can pinpoint brain abnormalities such as aneurysms and tumors, locate spinal tumors and inflammation, diagnose stroke and other diseases, and detect problems throughout the body.
An MRI procedure is painless and involves no X-ray radiation. A patient lies comfortably on a moveable bed, which is inserted into a tube surrounded by a giant magnet. The magnet creates a strong magnetic field that aligns the protons of hydrogen atoms, exposing them to a beam of radio waves that produce the images.
PACS and CR Technology
Provena Saint Joseph Hospital was one of the first Fox River Valley hospitals and the first in our area to install one of the wonders of advanced diagnostic technology, a computerized digital-imaging process called “Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS),” made by McKesson. By combining PACS with Computerized Radiography (CR), another technological marvel, we can capture and store your CT scans, MRIs, ultrasounds, and other images in a digital format rather than in film data files. This offers you important benefits.
· With CR, your digital images are available instantly rather than waiting for a radiologic technologist to develop film in a darkroom. This greatly reduces your procedure time, not only for your personal convenience, but it also provides vital information to your doctors when speed is essential.
· With PACS, physicians, surgeon, radiologist, and other specialists receive special access to your digital images instantly from their home or office, with complete security. They can scrutinize the images by zooming, cropping, rotating, brightening, and contrasting them to see them clearly from all perspectives, make an instant diagnosis, and develop a care plan for you far quicker and with greater precision than ever before.
Because early detection is the key to breast health, we strongly recommend getting annual mammograms at Provena Saint Joseph Hospital. We offer a highly skilled team of board certified radiologists and radiologic technologists accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR).
About 40 percent of postmenopausal women in the United States have low bone-mineral density (BMD); and another 7% have osteoporosis, reduced BMD, which puts them at serious risk for fractures.
You can discover, minimize, and even reverse BMD problems with a simple bone-mineral density test at the Main Hospital. Our advanced General Electric Luner bone density unit performs quick and painless dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), the preferred method for measuring bone density.
