The Ministry of Provena Saint Joseph Hospital began in 1902 when, at the request of Arch Bishop Feehan, Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart arrived in Elgin. The Sisters arrived at a two-story frame house at Jefferson Avenue and Prospect Street. Their mission was clear: to care for the sick and injured. 1904 -- Soon it became clear that the facility needed to expand, and a new brick building was completed across the street from the original property. 1914 -- An addition was built that increased bed capacity from 35 to 60. 1926 -- The final expansion of the building on Jefferson Street was complete. That year the hospital's patient admissions reached 2,750. Through the years, new services were provided in response to the needs of a growing community. 1970 -- With little space left for growth, construction began in 1970 for a new hospital on Elgin's west side. 1973 -- Operation Heart Line took place on August 19 with a parade of vehicles transporting patients to their new hospital. During the 1970s, the hospital began performing the first heart catheterizations in the Elgin area. In the late 1980s, the State of Illinois designated Saint Joseph Hospital a level II trauma center. The 1990s were a time of great growth for the hospital. No other decade in the hospital's history saw such advancements in the care Saint Joseph Hospital provided. 1997 -- The hospital received a new first name: Provena Saint Joseph Hospital. This was the result of the completion of a co-sponsorship between the hospital's parent company, Franciscan Sisters Health Care Corporation and Servants of the Holy Heart of Mary and Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, Regional Community of Chicago. 2004 -- Provena Saint Joseph Hospital received state approval to begin performing advanced cardiovascular services including open heart surgery. The addition of this service brought the hospital to the forefront of care providers in the Fox Valley area. 2005 -- Once again responding to the needs of the growing and expanding community we serve, Provena Saint Joseph Hospital broke ground for a $97 million Expansion & Modernization Project. Expected to be completed in Spring, 2009, this project will truly revolutionize our patient care environment. What this project means for the our community:
