Outpatient Pulmonary Rehabilitation

The Outpatient Pulmonary Rehabilitation program at PSJH provides a return to physiological, psychological and vocational functioning through aerobic exercise strength training and counseling for adults and older adults with chronic pulmonary disease.

The following diagnoses are usually admitted into the program:

  • COPD/Asthma/Emphysema
  • Pulmonary Fibrosis
  • Lung Cancer surgery
  • Lung transplants
  • Pulmonary Fibrosis/Restrictive Lung Diseases

The program meets two times each week for 1½ hours and may last up to 20 sessions. Participants exercise in a large fitness center at PSJH on a variety of aerobic equipment. Strength training is also provided. Individualized patient programs are provided.

The Phase 2 program is supervised by R.N’s and an exercise physiologist. A licensed physician serves as Medical Director. Each patient has pulse oximetry monitored as well as heart rate and blood pressures pre-, during and post-exercise.

A physician referral is required to enter the program as well as a pulmonary function test three months or less prior to entry. A stress test is preferred.
