Photo: (left) Lynnae Stewart, Braidwood: Lynnae underwent a preventative double mastectomy and reconstruction after having many benign lumps removed since her early 20s. Her grandmother developed breast cancer at age 40; her mother and numerous aunts also battled breast cancer. For her, preventative measures were for her health, and her peace of mind.
(back, standing) Debbie Cargerman, Plainfield: Debbie will be cancer free six years, this October. Every year since she turned 40 she faithfully underwent mammograms. One year, the doctors found a change which allowed them to catch and treat the cancer in time.
(sitting) Sandy Peterson, Joliet: Sandy performed her self breast exams monthly, because she knew she was at risk for breast cancer. Months after a mammogram, she detected a lump which subsequently was found to be breast cancer. She underwent a mastectomy and reconstruction and is now cancer free six years later.
(right) Millie Pinnick, Joliet: On the day of the photo, Millie got her five-year cancer-free clearance! Five years ago, Millie - whose mother and sister both had breast cancer - found a lump months after a mammogram. Caught in time, Millie was able to overcome cancer through her treatment.
