Linear
Accelerator
To provide cancer patients with state-of-the-art
treatments to fight their illness, Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center
Foundation has contributed 1.3 million dollars towards the purchase of a new
linear accelerator, which delivers a uniform dose of high-energy x-ray to the
region of the tumor, destroying the cancer cells while sparing the surroundign
normal tissue. The linear accelerator (LINAC) is the most versatile
machine that has the capability of offering all forms of external beam radiation
therapies as well as the most advanced
targeted treatment methods, including Intensity-Modulated Radiation
Therapy (IMRT), Image Guided Radiography (IGRT) and Stereotactic Radiosurgery
(SRS). The LINAC enables physicians to choose and use appropriate
treatments by offering the full spectrum of options, all in one machine in a
single room.
"We know how hard a diagnosis of cancer can be to a patient and his or her
family," says Sue Krueger, Manager, Sister Theresa Cancer Care Center.
"That is why we are dedicated to providing state-of-the-art equipment for our
patients fighting cancer. This is a great form of technology that will
provide more precise and less debilitating radiation treatments to cancer
patients, right here in the Joliet area."
