Most of us take breathing for granted. In and out. In and out. We don't have to be reminded to breathe. In fact, it's so effort-less we can do it in our sleep...with our eyes closed!
That is, until there is a problem. When the once simple act of inhaling and exhaling is difficult, when we can't seem to catch our breath...breathing becomes a very conscious and laborious effort.
Pulmonary Rehabilitation helps individuals with chronic lung conditions learn to breathe easier. By incorporating individualized exercise programs - aerobic, resistance, flexibility - into the lives of patients, Pulmonary Rehabilitation at Presence St. Mary's Hospital aims to improve endurance, strength, and health to enable them to breathe comfortably.
Pulmonary Rehabilitation is prescribed for patients who have breathing problems that other procedures of intervention cannot mend.
- Chronic Bronchitis
- COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)
- Pulmonary Fibrosis
- Sleep Apnea (in some cases)
- Occupational/Environmental Lung Disease
For patients in Pulmonary Rehabilitation, exercise isn't about gold medals, marathons or bench pressing. It's about working at your own pace and level and achieving your personal best in a productive environment where you are monitored personally by respiratory and cardiac professionals, are evaluated by a physical therapist, if necessary, and are among other individuals who know exactly what it's like to be short of breath. We have:
- Stationary bikes
- Hand-held weights
- Recumbent Steppers
- Arm ergometers
