Pulmonary Rehabilitation is prescribed for patients who have chronic lung problems and breathing issues that other procedures of intervention cannot mend.
It is a three-phase program that includes personal monitoring and evaluations:
Respiratory therapists introduce the program to each patient, and work with each patient to insure all preliminary testing is ordered and completed.
At Your Side
Respiratory therapists work one-on-one with patients - teaching the correct way to use equipment (stationary bikes, treadmills, hand-held weights, etc.) and monitoring how long to use it. A cardiac nurse monitors each patient's heart rhythm during these initial sessions. Patients continue to work at their own pace in small groups. The respiratory therapist checks blood pressure and oxygen levels before, during, and after every exercise session, and monitors breathing and exertion effort.
Patients work independently to maintain the quality of life gained in phases 1 and 2. Pulmonary Rehabilitation at Presence St. Mary's Hospital offers individual attention from caring professionals:
- Certified and Registered Respiratory & Physical Therapists
- Registered Nurses/Cardiac Care Specialty
- Competent Support Staff
Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a Medicare program (for those who qualify) and is covered by most insurance plans.
Presence St. Mary's Hospital also offers pulmonary rehabilitation at Presence Heritage Village and Presence Our Lady of Victory as part of their rehabilitation programs.
