Provena St. Mary's Hospital is certified by The Joint Commission as a Primary Stroke Center. What does this mean for patients? The care in our Emergency Department is at the very highest level for those who are having a stroke.
In Illinois, approximately five people die every hour from heart disease, stroke, or other cardiovascular condition, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health. But, whether it's on the national scene or in our community, one thing is certain: When it comes to stroke, time is of the essence. In other words, time lost is brain lost.
Today, thanks to the certification of Provena St. Mary's Hospital as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center, patients have immediate access to life-saving care and the greatest chance of survival and of recovery. Provena St. Mary's Hospital earned the Gold Seal of ApprovalTM from The Joint Commission for Advanced Primary Stroke Centers, distinguishing it as an expert provider of emergent stroke care.
To be certified as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center, The Joint Commission conducted an extensive review of care at Provena St. Mary's Hospital, including:
- Current stroke patients and the care received
- Competencies of physicians, nurses, and staff
- Compliance with national standards and safety goals
- Effective use of guidelines to manage and to optimize care
