In order to keep pace with advancements in the scientific understanding of cancer, Presence St. Mary’s Cancer Care is highly focused on research and clinical trials. Clinical trials are research studies that test new ways to prevent, detect, diagnose and treat different forms of cancer. Led by Senior Investigator, Dr. Silviya Velinova, the research team at Presence St. Mary’s Cancer Care, meets once a week. They review new patients’ information to determine if there is a clinical trial that fits their criteria.
“Research opens an avenue for treatment that you may not already know,” Ann Lane explained. “It involves comparing the current standard of care with an additional treatment option with the results possibly leading to an improved patient outcome.” Ann is a research nurse at Presence St. Mary’s Cancer Care in Bourbonnais.
