Top 50 Health System

Provena Health has been named one of the top 50 U.S. health systems based on hospital clinical quality and efficiency, according to a new study released by Thomson Reuters. Using inpatient quality of care data from Medicare Provider Analysis (MedPAR) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, the study evaluated 252 health systems with a total of 1,720 hospitals.

In an in-depth exploration of five quality indicators composed of risk-adjusted mortality, complications, patient safety, Joint Commission Core Measures performance, and average length of stay, the report found that the best systems, like Provena, deploy key strategies to drive high quality care at the bedside. Those include a system-wide committee that coordinates and studies quality, significant involvement from front-line caregivers and systematic use of leading edge technology such as an electronic health record.

"This very prestigious designation is a direct reflection of just how deeply our dedicated employees and physicians support our belief that an outcomes-driven and standardized approach to quality is not only efficient, but clearly best for our patients and residents," said Margaret Gavigan, System Senior Vice President, Chief Clinical Officer. "We are extremely proud of the women and men across Provena Health who bring this award-winning and compassionate care each and every day to the communities we serve."

This is the first time Thomson Reuters, a highly regarded healthcare information company, assessed the quality and efficiency of care health systems as single entities. Researchers from Thomson Reuters' 100 Top Hospitals program have analyzed and reported on the performance of individual hospitals since 1993.

Here in Danville, at Provena United Samaritans, we've invested millions of dollars over the last several years in leading-edge technology proven to reduce medical errors and complications, reduce length of stay, and overall improve the quality of care at the bedside.  Take a look at our Patient Safety pages to see what we've done locally to contribute to the accolades of being part of a top 50 health system.
